THE ANCIENT ARMIES OF ISRAEL DURING MOSES' LEADERSHIP

The Ancient Armies of Israel during Moses’ Leadership - by Snake Blocker

To get an idea of battles of the past, it’s good to look at how large forces were that defeated the world powers of their times.  Israel defeated armies many times larger and more powerful.  History records many armies exceeding one million in size.  Under the leadership of Moses, a census was conducted in the wilderness of Sinai.  Here are those numbers:

The troops under the 12 Tribes of Israel during the time of Moses:

1.      Tribe of Reuben                                    46,500
2.      Tribe of Simeon                                    59,300
3.      Tribe of Gad                                         45,650
4.      Tribe of Judah                                      74,600
5.      Tribe of Issachar                                   54,400
6.      Tribe of Zebulun                                   57,400
7.      Tribe of Ephraim (Joseph’s clan)           40,500
(Joseph’s clan listed 7th on the list in Israel’s book of records. “7” is the number of God)
8.      Tribe of Manasseh                                32,200
9.      Tribe of Benjamin                                 35,400
10.  Tribe of Dan                                         41,500
11.  Tribe of Ashor                                      41,500
12.  Tribe of Naphtali                                  53,400

Total size of Israel’s army under Moses        603,550 troops

The Tribe of Levi (Levite) was not recruited for Israel’s army.  The Tribe of Levi was put in charge of the Tabernacle and Temple work.

The army of Israel was also known as the Army of God. Israel was and still is known as God’s Chosen People.  The enemies of Israel feared them, because they knew God was fighting their armies for them.  History speaks of many great warriors and generals to come out Israel’s army.  Even today, countries much larger still cannot invade or defeat Israel.
